Rainbow Rag combines two lines of thought. First, it sets out the seven colours of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Second, it compares this spectrum with human diversity, in which everyone is different, but all people are essential to and of equal value in an inclusive society. The song is in the style of ragtime, which was popularised in the early twentieth century by the American composer and pianist, Scott Joplin. It was called ‘ragtime’ because of its ‘ragged’ or syncopated rhythms. The best know rag is The Entertainer, which was used in the film The Sting and more recently in the video game Gran Turismo 5.
